Two kinds of turtles
There are two kinds of turtles in my pond:
Eastern painted turtle
Snapping turtle
The painted turtles climb up on the rocks to bask in the sun. They are usually very wary of people, and plop into the water as soon as they see you coming. It takes very slow movement and staying low (and getting muddy!) to sneak up on them. The big one in the picture below has his feet retracted, which means he is very relaxed and not worried about me being close.
The snappers are hardly ever seen, except when they leave the pond to lay their eggs. Sometimes they float near the surface in the middle of the pond, but you have to look VERY carefully to see them amidst the lily pads and duckweed (pictures coming).
